What the test measures
Markers of hepatitis B infection (such as HBsAg and anti-HBc), antibodies to hepatitis C, and HIV.
When your doctor may order it
- Before starting a biologic, rituximab, JAK inhibitor or other strong immunosuppressant
- Before long-term steroids or DMARDs, as advised
- Raised liver enzymes during treatment
Understanding the result
A positive result does not always rule out treatment: your doctor can arrange antiviral protection or specialist care so arthritis treatment can continue safely.
