Uric acid test in Bhubaneswar
What the test measures
The amount of uric acid (urate) in your blood.
When your doctor may order it
- A sudden, very painful, swollen joint, often the big toe
- Monitoring allopurinol, febuxostat or other urate-lowering medicines
- Kidney stones or a family history of gout
Understanding the result
A high level supports gout but does not prove it: many people with high uric acid never get gout. During an acute attack the level can be normal, so a normal result does not rule gout out. Finding urate crystals in joint fluid confirms the diagnosis.
This page gives general information. Your result must be interpreted by your doctor together with your symptoms and examination.
Seeing a rheumatologist?
OARC’s rheumatologists treat gout attacks and plan long-term urate lowering.

Frequently asked questions
What is a normal uric acid level?
Reference ranges vary by lab, sex and age. For people being treated for gout, the usual treatment target is below 6 mg/dL. Read OARC’s uric acid guide.
Can my uric acid be normal during a gout attack?
Yes. Levels often fall during an attack, which is why the test is often repeated a few weeks later.
