ENA profile (extractable nuclear antigens) in Bhubaneswar
What the test measures
The profile looks for antibodies against extractable nuclear antigens, including Ro (SSA), La (SSB), Sm, U1-RNP, Scl-70 and Jo-1, and related antigens in extended panels.
When your doctor may order it
- After a positive ANA, to find the specific antibody
- Suspected lupus, Sjögren’s syndrome, systemic sclerosis, mixed connective tissue disease or myositis
- Pregnancy planning in women known to have Ro (SSA) antibodies
Understanding the result
Some antibodies are closely linked to particular diseases: Sm with lupus, Ro and La with Sjögren’s syndrome and lupus, Scl-70 with diffuse systemic sclerosis, U1-RNP with mixed connective tissue disease, and Jo-1 with myositis and lung involvement. Results are always read with your symptoms and other tests.
This page gives general information. Your result must be interpreted by your doctor together with your symptoms and examination.

Frequently asked questions
Why was ENA ordered after my ANA?
A positive ANA says autoantibodies are present; the ENA profile tells your doctor which ones, which narrows down the possible diagnosis.
Does a positive Ro (SSA) antibody matter in pregnancy?
Yes. Women with Ro antibodies need closer monitoring during pregnancy. Discuss the result with your rheumatologist and obstetrician before or early in pregnancy.
